Bucks County Academy of Fencing Draws More than 70 Fencers for
10th Annual Flynn Memorial Competition
LAMBERTVILLE -- The
Bucks County Academy of Fencing attracted more than 70 fencers to its
10th annual Robert Flynn Memorial Epee Tournament Sunday, Oct. 28.
A total of 73 epee
fencers from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania – and as far away as
Chicago – participated in the competition, making the event one of the
biggest since its inception in 1998.
Alexey Cheremsky of
the Fencing Academy of Westchester took first place, earning his “A”
rating, the highest classification in U.S. fencing. Arne Backes of the
Fencing Academy of Philadelphia won the silver medal, with Andrew
Bostick of Medeo Fencing Club in Bridgewater won third place.
BCAF fencers in the
top 20 included Mark Holbrow, who placed 12th, James Flint in
13th place, and Sean McHugh, who came in 18th.
In addition, Terri
Doom of the Chambersburg Fencing Club in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, was
recognized as the top female fencer (placing 38th), Cheremsky
was the highest-placing Veteran fencer (age 40 and up), and Simon
Norrelykke (22nd place) of the Sebastiani Fencing Academy in
Princeton was the highest-placing Unclassified fencer. Bostick was the
highest-placing Junior fencer, and Tyler Adams of Medeo was the top
Cadet fencer.
Prizes included a $200 cash award and a Tissot watch for the first place
winner, $150 for second, $100 for third and $75 for fourth. In addition,
each top male and female fencer was awarded a purse of $200, with $75
each going to the top Unclassified, Cadet, Junior and Veteran fencer.
The tournament is
dedicated to the memory of Robert Flynn, a Verona, New Jersey native and
dedicated fencer, who passed away August 2, 1998 during a competition.
Business sponsors of
the event included Nicola’s Pizza, Absolute Fencing Gear, DataGnostics
and Diehl’s Jewelers.
Founded in New Hope in 1981 by Maestro Mark
Holbrow, Bucks County Academy of Fencing has been dedicated to creating
champions on an off the fencing strip for more than 25 years. Classes
are open to anyone ages 8 and up and are available for instruction in
foil, epee and saber. The Academy moved to Lambertville in 2003, where
it has 14 Olympic size fencing strips.

The Bucks County Academy of Fencing attracted nearly 70
fencers to its 9th annual Robert Flynn Memorial Epee Tournament Sunday,
Nov. 5.
A total of 69 fencers
from Long Island, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia
attended the event, making it the second-largest but strongest turnout
since it was inaugurated.
Justin Meehan of the
Fencing Center of Long Island in Deer Park, New York, took first place,
with Stanislav Gutkovskiy of the Fencing Academy of South Jersey in
Cherry Hill, New Jersey, taking second. Chris Palmer of South Mountain
Fencing & Martial Arts Academy in Madison, New Jersey, finished third,
earning his “A” classification, the highest rating in fencing. Rounding
out the top five were Arne Backes of the Fencing Academy of
Philadelphia, who came in fourth, and Bucks County’s Trevor Hummel, who
placed fifth. Meehan, Gutkovskiy, Backes and Hummel all hold the “A”
rating.
Hummel was also
recognized for being the highest-placing junior fencer (under 20), and
Pearson Miller of Fencers Club in New York was the highest-placing cadet
(under 17), finishing in 16th place. The top female competitor was
Martyna Urbanowicz of the Academy of Holy Angels, who finished 24th, and
the top veteran fencer (over 40) was Tom Meier of Medeo Fencing Club in
Bridgewater, New Jersey, who came in 8th. Michael LeBlanc of the Fencing
Academy of Philadelphia was the highest-placing unclassified fencer,
placing 28th.
Prizes included a $200

Mr. Flynn suddenly passed away in the middle of an
epee bout passed away on August 2nd 1998 during a summer competition at
Bucks County Academy of Fencing when it was located in New Hope. Mr.
Flynn learned the art of fencing when he was only 5 from his father Dr.
James H. Flynn who was a member of the US Sabre team that won the bronze
medal in the 1948 Olympics. The dedication to & love of fencing was an
inspiration to three generations of fencers. This tournament is
dedicated to his memory & contributions to the sport.

Bucks County Academy of Fencing’s Nick Krywopusk and James Flint took
first and third place, respectively, at BCAF’s latest Open Epee
Tournament held Sunday, Oct. 15.
Krywopusk, 17, took the gold medal after beating Joseph Way of the
Fencing Academy of Philadelphia in the final bout. Flint tied for third
with Hillsborough YMCA fencer Daniel Richards, who earned his “B” rating
at the competition. The tournament attracted 44 fencers from
Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
Andrew Fiederlein of Fencers Club in New York
finished in fifth place, with BCAF fencer John Ridge placing sixth and
Tom Meier of Bridgewater-based Medeo Fencing Club coming in seventh.
Rounding out the top 10 were Jonathan Finan of Cercle d’Escrime de
Princeton, BCAF’s James Ferrone, and James Gallagher of FAP.
A senior at Princeton Day School, Krywopusk, has
been competing since 2004. He is from Richboro, Penn., and holds an “A”
classification in epee. He has trained with Maestro Mark Holbrow,
Maestro Flint and Dirk Goldgar at BCAF and Paul Epply-Schmidt, head
coach at Princeton Day School.
Maestro Flint from New Hope was Women's Fencing
Coach and Assistant Men's Fencing Coach at Princeton University from
1980 to 1983. He was the National Veteran Men's Epee Champion in the
50-59 age group and competed in the World Veteran's Championships in
Limoge, France in September 2003. He is an “A” rated epee fencer.

BCAF Epee Fencer Hummel Earns Highest Rating at Virginia
Competition
Bucks County Academy of Fencing’s Trevor
Hummel earned fencing’s highest classification after taking the
silver medal at the 2006 Kickoff Open held Sept. 23 and 24 in
Annandale, Virginia.
Hummel, 16, won the “A” rating in epee during the Senior Mixed Epee
event, which was held at Northern Virginia Community College and had
130 entrants. A resident of East Amwell, New Jersey, Hummel went
undefeated in his initial pool of seven fencers. He beat A-rated
fencer Michael Nussbaum of the Virginia Academy of Fencing 15-14
before losing 11-15 to Lorenzo Casertano, also an “A” fencer, of the
New York Athletic Club in the gold medal bout.
Hummel, who was previously rated a “B” in epee, also finished sixth
in the Mixed Foil Open out of 118 fencers. He currently holds a “B”
rating in foil. Hummel has been fencing foil for about six years and
epee for three years. He trains with Maestro Mark Holbrow at BCAF
and has also worked with Maestro Jim Flint. He is a junior at
Princeton Day School, where he fences on the varsity foil team under
coach Paul Epply-Schmidt.
BCAF epeeist John Ridge placed 25th in the Mixed Epee Open. Ridge,
an “A” rated epee fencer, is 56 and lives in Ivyland, Pennsylvania.
He has been fencing since 2001 and also fences foil.

TROPHIES
IN MEN'S EPEE & WOMEN'S FOIL
Sophie
Ciaravino and Nicholas Krywopusk of the Bucks County Academy of Fencing
were honored with 2006 New Jersey Cup awards by the New Jersey Division
of the United States Fencing Association for their accomplishments
throughout the 2005-2006 fencing season.
Ciaravino received the New Jersey Cup in Women’s Foil and Krywopusk was
awarded the New Jersey Cup in Men’s Epee. The trophies were awarded
during the Garden State Games held at Stevens Institute of Technology in
July.
Ciaravino, 16, lives in North Wales, Penn. She will be a senior at
Lansdale Catholic High School in the Fall. Ciaravino has been fencing
for about three years and holds a “C” rating in foil. She is coached by
Maestro Mark Holbrow, the academy’s founder and head fencing master.
Krywopusk, 17, is from Richboro, Penn. and has been competing since
2004. He will be a senior at Princeton Day School under Paul
Epply-Schmidt and holds his “A” rating in epee He is coached by BCAF
instructor Dirk Goldgar. He also ranked second in the standings for the
New Jersey Cup in Men’s Foil.
The New Jersey Cup is awarded to the fencer in each discipline who
garners the highest number of points based on their participation and
placement in key tournaments during the New Jersey Division’s regular
fencing season. This is the third straight season a BCAF fencer has won
the award in Women’s Foil, with Cordelia Link receiving the 2004
and 2005 NJ Cup
in that category.
